1 Corinthians 9:23: I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it. 26Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air…

When hunting big whitetails, I always sight in my rifle so I can hit what I aim at and I always have a plan. I don’t just walk into the woods and hope a big buck will stroll by me. I take all sorts of factors into account before I ever step foot in the woods – hunting history, time of year, rut phase, weather, food sources, size of property, habitat, hunting pressure, possible tactics, target buck size, property rules, regulations, freedom to scout, competition, etc. I size up the situation and make a plan. Yes, it may change with time and information, but I always go with purpose, ready to take “aim” and hit the target when the time comes.

Practices for Herd Censusing

How do you go about censusing a herd? Game cameras strategically placed in high-use areas (best when used with feed or bait) during the fall (preferably before the shooting starts) are invaluable censusing tools. Consistency of time and place brings best results.

Colossians 1:13-14: “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

I was lost…alone in near darkness …in uncharted Africa! The river I was following had turned south…again, leaving me with a decision. I knew the hunting party I had left to get unstuck from deep sand two hours earlier was somewhere north. With the sun dropping fast, my professional hunter had asked me go ahead to look for a shallow river crossing before dark, noting we couldn’t get past a low mountain range that sloped down to the river a mile or so away. He said he’d pick me up somewhere along the river when they got unstuck. Neither of us knew the serpentine river took a wide swing southward between us and mountain and the riverine vegetation got steadily deeper and thicker. Now with darkness falling and me getting ever farther from my party, I faced a decision – try to backtrack to where I had come from or go in the opposite direction toward the mountain range in hopes of finding them.

A Life Changing Moment

2 Corinthians 5:17 … if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

In the 1990 movie, “Mr. Destiny,” Jim Bulushi played Larry Burrows, a teenager whose entire life was defined by one instant in time. With one swing of the bat during a baseball game in which he struck out in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and his team down three points, his life changed and the course of his years was set! How would you like to know that your entire life depended on one thing, one test, one moment in time? Well, it does! When I saw that movie, I thought, wow, that’s a lot like the Christian life … where one brief moment determines the outcome of your entire life … for all eternity.

The Ultimate Personal Responsibility

Matt. 16:13-15 … (Jesus asks) His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

With our government taking more and more control over our lives, we live in a time when it is getting easier to abdicate our responsibilities, welfare, and, indeed, our very future to Big Brother or others who “know better.” Today, it is fashionable to blame someone else for our problems, actions, and circumstances. It’s too easy to expect someone else to bail us out of messes we have gotten ourselves into.

Management Is a God Thing

Genesis 3:23… “therefore the LORD God sent him (Adam) out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.”

From the popularity of game management today, it’s obvious that we hunters have an innate desire to manage the land and its wildlife. Have you ever wondered what is behind that desire to work the land and improve its production? Well, it’s not new with us today. It goes all the way back to the beginning of man’s existence. When God send Adam out of the Garden of Eden, He instructed him to “cultivate the ground.” Every time I’m on my tractor, I think about that verse. There’s something about working the ground that appeals to men. It runs deep. It goes to the heart of our goal-oriented nature; the cause and effect motivation that so drives us men. Even Solomon, described as the wisest man in the Old Testament, when he wanted to “enlarge his works” (Ecclesiastes 2:4-7), he planted vineyards, made gardens and parks, planted all kinds of fruit trees, made ponds of water, and possessed flocks and herds. He managed the land!

Where’s Your Treasure?

by Samantha Davis
Matt. 19-21: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I have a room full of trophies from all over the world. They represent the memories of a lifetime of hunting, an endeavor for which I have an endless passion, especially for big whitetails. On my wall is a collection of record-class whitetails that includes 34 topping 170 gross B&C. Something I consider a miracle and blessing from God. I’ve hunted the great game animals of the world, including most of the dangerous game – grizzly, Kodiak, lion, leopard, elephant, hippo and cape and water buffalo. They are all in my trophy room … but these trophies are NOT the things I treasure most in life. I place NO hope in them or any other worldly possession or endeavor. My most valued “treasure”, indeed, my only hope lies solely in my relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Winds of Change

John 3:8: … “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

My Leupold rangefinder read 297 yards to the buck. He was standing broadside, hunkered down rear to the wind. A fairly routine shot…normally. But this was not a normal day. The Wyoming wind was topping out at a record-breaking 75 mph. The bullet was going to be blown off target…a lot. I had no idea how much. I’d never calculated wind drift for 75 mph! So I guessed and held the crosshairs just in front on his hip, hoping for a lung shot. From my prone position, I was able to hold steady and escape the worst of the buffeting wind. I waited for a hammering gust to pass and let fly…and hit the buck in the neck just below his ear, at least 4 feet from my point of aim!
