The Bucks of Tecomate 2009 Season Hunts - III

Jen Shoots Our First Boone & Crocket Non-Typical
My daughter, Jennifer Duplissey, was next in front of the camera. A couple of weeks earlier one of my guides had videoed a monster mystery buck we had never seen during the management buck hunts. He was a huge non-typical with a cluster of extra points around his base and brow tines. As my wife and girls so often do, they set about claiming the deer for their own. Jennifer somehow won. Jennifer is one of the best hunters I know, and when Jennifer gets after a buck, he has been seriously “gotten after.” We didn’t know much about this deer’s habitats or range, but I figured I would see him soon on the hanging pole.

The Bucks of Tecomate 2009 Season Hunts - II

Thank God for Texas!
Finally, in early December, The Bucks of Tecomate headed to Texas ... ah, Texas! I was very happy to be back on my El Cazador Ranch. Wow, did it look good! I knew there were giants afoot in that scruffy-looking brush! I would soon find out just how right I was! The StealthCam photos yielded one BIG surprise after another. Despite a long drought during the first half of the year, we seemed to be headed to a banner year on El Cazador. What is possible with the Tecomate Management System amazes even me ... and I had very high expectations!

The Bucks of Tecomate 2009 Season Hunts - I

The Midwest Is A CHALLENGE!
In late November, Gary Schwarz and I headed to Pike County, Illinois, the heart of Midwest big buck hunting. Gary and I were there for two purposes – hunting for The Bucks of Tecomate TV show by day and hosting the Versus Whitetail Challenge by night. That kind of schedule made for a wild four days in Illinois! If you saw the Challenge, which aired in December on VERSUS, you know hunting was tough. Larry Weishuhn and Challenge winner Olivia Angelloz (yes, Olivia won the Challenge against the 3 veteran men hunters with a last-minute kill) shot the only two deer taken, the biggest of which was a 137! It was tough in Pike County for the Challenge contestants ... and Gary and me! I never saw a buck over 2½ years old. Gary had a 160-class 10-pointer at 75 yards on the first morning, but the cameraman couldn’t get on him. We came home humbled and more than a little frustrated.

The Bucks of Tecomate 2009 Season Hunts

The Bucks of Tecomate 2009 Season Hunts
imageWell, it has been a long hunting (and TV) season with plenty of ups and downs. In the end, we “got ‘er done” but it wasn’t easy. Lots of no-kill hunts, which is to be expected when you’re hunting big mature bucks like we do on The Bucks of Tecomate. Far too much happened to tell you all the details. Truthfully, I could write a book on this season. When you see the shows this fall, you will see that it was a great season, but it wasn’t easy. We hunted long and hard. Tecomate Team went on over 20 hunts, from Montana to Maryland to Iowa to Texas, before completing our 10 show quota. When the smoke cleared, we had a bunch of giant bucks on the ground, but we went home with our tails between our legs more than ever before this year. The Midwest, in particular, kicked our butts. Thank God for our Texas ranches managed under the Tecomate Management Strategy! Over the next few weeks, I’m going to try to give a thumbnail season recap. Hang on. It’s quite a ride!
