Rut Report October 27, 2014 - Illinois & Iowa
by Terry Sedivec

Illinois – We’ll I’m just coming off a hunt in southern Illinois, so I thought I’d share what we saw as it pertains to the rut in that area. The week Oct 20-25 we hunted heavily in the Carmi, IL area. The challenges were warmer temperatures and a substantial amount of grain crops in the ground. We saw signs of younger bucks chasing, but it would appear most of the mature bucks remained either nocturnal or stayed in the corn. Now with that said, the farmers were going all out, so that will push the mature bucks back to the timber and alternative food sources. My best estimation if you are hunting this area is that if the cooler temps come in, you may be within 10-14 days of seeing your rut activity pick up. One good cold spell could be the game changer so get ready!

Iowa – We’ve seen those same warmer temps hit our state as well, but that’s all about to change. This coming weekend we will be looking at highs in the low 50’s dipping to 30 overnight. It won’t get cold enough to get thoseTecomate Turnips palatable…yet, but we’re getting there. We are also seeing more mature bucks cruising during daylight hours. I think we could see some early rut behavior start as early as this weekend, but definitely in the next two weeks, things will be rolling.
