Tip #39 - Have Confidence

Unfortunately, confidence is hard to acquire until you have had some success.  But it’s amazing how much easier trophy hunting becomes once you’ve killed a trophy buck or two. Success breeds success, but you may have to endure several seasons of heartbreak before you experience that first “success.”

Tip #38 – Have a “Back Up” Buck (or 2)

In order to successfully harvest mature, trophy bucks every year, on average, you will have to identify and hunt for 2-3 for each trophy buck that you are lucky enough to tag.  Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket by limiting yourself to one trophy buck.  Be willing to harvest bucks lower on your hit list if a good opportunity arises.

Tip #37 – Don’t “Burn” Your Favorite Spot

Repeated use of a stand location, particularly when the wind is not right, can at times contaminate your hunting area. Using a stand or location too often is a great way to be sure that a mature whitetail will avoid your area. Try to schedule your hunting times and frequency with the most likely times that your buck is active and likely to expose himself.

Tip #36 – Hunt the Wind

Hopefully, you first took the time to identify stand sites based on predominant wind directions.  And, hopefully, you also placed additional stands based on alternate wind directions.  Never hunt a stand if the wind is wrong.  On very rare occasions, you may get lucky if you do, but you will ruin countless other opportunities, many of which you will never be aware of because the buck became aware of your presence and avoided you before you had any idea he was there.

Tip #34 – Make Your Doe Quotas

Primarily in the South, try to achieve your antlerless (doe) quotas as early as possible. This will drop hunting pressure and increase buck activity during the rut.

Tip #33 – Funnel Deer

When setting up your property in the off season try to manipulate multiple areas into corridors, bottle necks, corners, and other areas that will funnel deer into the open that is in range for a shot.

Tip #32 – Hunt Comfortable

From your hunting clothes and boots to your tree stand, the more comfortable you are the more time you will be able to stay in the field. The more time you stay in the field the more chances you will have at that buck of a lifetime.
