The Bucks of Tecomate 2009 Season Hunts - VIII
A 24-Point Finale To An Awesome Season!
Every now and then I see a young buck on my ranch that I know is going to be very special when he grows up. Such was the case with a buck we came to call "Stickers." I first saw him two years ago when he was 4½ years old and made a mental note that I would go after him when he reached huntable age (that meant 6½ on my ranch). I didn’t see him at all in the field when he was 5½ but did get photos of him on StealthCam. When this season rolled around, he was one of the bucks we targeted ... if we could find him. In October, I once again got StealthCam photos of him and what a buck he was! As near as I could tell, he was a basic 13-pointer with at least 11 non-typical points. I figured he would score in the upper 180s! The problem was that he was almost impossible to see. It wasn’t until the rut was winding down that he finally showed. My daughter, Jennifer, videoed him the 2nd week of January. Jen had already shot her trophy buck, and I was still after my giant 16-pointer. My wife, Debbie, "offered" to put on hold the pursuit of her Big 10, which she had been hunting unsuccessfully for many days after "missing" (wounding) him, and go after Stickers. She and Jen hunted the buck for three days and had a couple of brief but exciting encounters. In the course hunting him, she came across and eventually shot an injured 11-pointer scoring 159 that we feared would succumb to his wound. While she was hunting Stickers, Marcus Luttrell and I happened to see Deb’s wounded Big 10 (three weeks after she shot him). She immediately returned to her hunt for the wounded Big 10-pointer, which she eventually got. I finally got my 200-class 16-pointer, filling out our family’s trophy quota.

Since the family had all scored on big bucks, I sent Jeff Foxworthy after Stickers. He didn’t see him but saw another buck he liked and shot him, The Bull. Jeff’s kill marked the end of the official TV hunts. All the cameramen went home, and Debbie and I had the ranch to ourselves a day or two before I had to leave for the SHOT Show. I decided to go after Stickers myself. I really wanted this deer. He was a character buck unlike any I had ever taken. In the 11 years I’ve owned the ranch, I had never shot 2 trophies. I went after the ghost-like buck, not thinking I had any chance. Unbelievably, I got him ... after watching him come and go several times before the light was sufficient to video him for a shot. I videoed the hunt myself ... from a ground blind. Not only was this one of the best bucks I’ve ever taken, a 24-point 193 gross non-typical, the hunt was extremely satisfying and capped off the best season we’ve ever had on El Cazador Ranch.

David, My name is Scott Mays and I am from Lexington, Kentucky. I am an avid hunter and watcher of your show on the VS. channel. I have never had the chance to go after a World Class Texas Trophy. Is there any way that I could come down to your ranch and hunt with you and Jeff? This would be a dream come true for me. Please let me know. Thanks and God Bless Scott Mays 859-338-5127

David Just read your bio the other day. Been reading and watching you for years and knew there was something I really liked about you. Always something special about an Auburn man! I'm class of '74 in engineering. When were you there? My ROTC drill sgt. set up my drill assignment to lift weights with him and a guy named Keith. Years later, reading Sports Afield about his "watch beaver", I found out that "Keith" was Dr. Keith Causey. Visited with him several times and he taught me a ton. Last time I went to his office, he had 3 barn owl chicks in a box. Great guy. Love the show and the new VS Country promos. I raised my son hunting and fishing. He saw his first deer at 5 months old and rattled up a buck the first time he tried at 18 months old. You know God has to be an Auburn fan 'cause the best sunsets are orange and blue. WAR EAGLE and God bless you and yours. Max Nunnelley

Dear Mr. Morris, I just wanted to drop you a quick thank you note for your autographed copy of “Hunting Trophy Whitetails” that I received through your mother- and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hoven. I have had the privilege of caring for this lovely couple in my Nephrology practice for about 2 years now and they make me really proud to be from the South. I didn’t realize the connection between you and Mr. and Mrs. Hoven until one of our conversations during a “tag team” visit when I was seeing both last Fall. It was just before Christmas and I mentioned that I had been hunting with my dad in South Texas that previous Thanksgiving. When I asked how his Thanksgiving went, he casually mentioned that he had been in South Texas too on his son-in-law’s ranch. He made an offhand comment about “that funny man Foxworthy” which immediately sparked my curiosity. When I asked further if his son-in-law was David Morris, he confirmed my suspicions. I told him how big of a fan of your show I was and later (probably because I couldn’t conceal my enthusiasm), I later had the pleasure of meeting your wife, Debbie, in the office when they came back for a follow up and brought her along. I was very excited to get to meet her, especially after seeing her bag several trophies on your show. I felt like I was meeting a real celebrity! She was very nice, although I know she was taken aback by my enthusiasm! Anyway, I wasn’t sure how to reach you to properly express my appreciation for your kind-hearted gift until I discovered your website. Having grown up in East Texas, I have hunted whitetails since I was 8 years old, and although I have killed my share of young bucks learning to hunt in the Pineywoods, I don’t think I’ve really learned to hunt until very recently. I currently lease a ranch from my partner, Dr. Garza, in Benavides, Texas, and have been on a crash course in aging whitetails on the hoof, as well as trophy management and have learned a great deal and enjoyed the sport much more by allowing myself to get to truly observe whitetails in the field while letting them live to age another year over the past 5 years. It has tested my patience, but I’m a better hunter for it. As you can imagine, I was truly excited to receive your book and have now read it twice. I have learned a great deal from your wealth of knowledge on the subject and am a devoted fan of your television show. From reading your book and observing you on TV, I can tell you are a devoted family man and great example of what we all should strive to be as hunters. You are truly blessed and just watching your episode with Marcus Luttrell a couple of weeks ago only confirms my impression of you as not only a dedicated hunter, but as a genuinely honorable man. I wish you and your family continued success with your ventures and look forward to another exciting season of your television show (I have it set to record on my DVR every Friday night!) and can’t wait to try out some of your tactics and advice I learned from your book when I go out to the field this year. I will treasure the book and look forward to reading it over and over again and sharing your insights with my hunting partners over the coming years. Sincerely, Chris Glanton, MD San Antonio Kidney Disease Center Physicians Group PS. Tell Jeff that this nephrologist “made good” from Marshall, Texas, is still a redneck at heart and continue to be a huge fan of him not only as a comedian, but also as a South Texas trophy whitetail hunter! Happy Hunting and as you said “may all your bucks be wide, heavy, and tall.”
