Tecomate Rut Report – Northeast US – October 14, 2013
by Mali Vujanic

Let's face it, if we could figure deer out every time it might not be as fun. But one thing is for certain, when you are trying to figure out bucks during the month of October, it's no easy task. The only easy part about October is that the close we get to Halloween, the higher the probability we will cross paths with a mature buck!

During the first 2 thirds of October there is a significant transformation taking place in the woods that is understood by some but vastly misunderstood by hunters across the North East. Food sources are changing rapidly, weather is changing and bucks are settling rank and territory. Most mature buck movement is switching over entirely to after dark and as much as we have the drive to go hunting, many guys do more damage to their hunting properties by hunting for the big boys when the chances of them walking in daytime is very, very slim.

Here we are mid October and the full blown rut is about 30 days away. During the cover of darkness bucks are trolling fields and they all share those classic field edge scrapes we often find. Get your black flash cameras on those scrapes and start cataloging which bucks are sticking around and which ones are coming to set up camp. As Halloween approaches, check your cameras on those edge scrapes. When you start getting legal light pictures of the more mature bucks, it's time to sit in the steel. Remember, the rut only comes one time per year and it lasts just a short while. If you must hunt early and mid October, be smart and hunt/scout smart. Remember what I said before, October is misunderstood by the vast majority. Many bucks simply will not walk during legal shooting times and they can pattern you in a snap.....does too, for that matter. With a few bumps, a mature buck can move off the property very quickly. The Big Show is just around the corner, so be prepared and good luck!
