Tecomate Rut Report – KS – Oct 16, 2014
by Ted Jaycox

It’s mid-October and not much is happening here in Kansas, or probably anywhere else in the whitetail world for that matter. I know there are exceptions, but generally speaking, the rut is still several weeks away. However, the telltale signs are beginning to show. Small scrapes near field edges, pencil thin saplings shined up or broken in half, all suggest that the long awaited annual event is about to begin. For the hunter it is a difficult time. The once visible summer, see them whenever you want to bucks, have vanished. I don’t mean they have gone nocturnal, I mean they have all but disappeared. Trail cameras that daily showed multiple mature bucks are now lucky to produce a couple of 1-1/2 old wannabe’s. My only success has been to find the few remaining standing Milo fields and hunt the trails leading to this important food source. Patience and persistence is the name of the game during the dreaded October lull. Keep the faith, better times are just around the Halloween corner.
