RESCUED FROM THE DARKNESS

Colossians 1:13-14: “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

I was lost…alone in near darkness …in uncharted Africa! The river I was following had turned south…again, leaving me with a decision. I knew the hunting party I had left to get unstuck from deep sand two hours earlier was somewhere north. With the sun dropping fast, my professional hunter had asked me go ahead to look for a shallow river crossing before dark, noting we couldn’t get past a low mountain range that sloped down to the river a mile or so away. He said he’d pick me up somewhere along the river when they got unstuck. Neither of us knew the serpentine river took a wide swing southward between us and mountain and the riverine vegetation got steadily deeper and thicker. Now with darkness falling and me getting ever farther from my party, I faced a decision – try to backtrack to where I had come from or go in the opposite direction toward the mountain range in hopes of finding them.

With darkness closing in and the prospects of a night alone in the wilds of Africa, I was “rescued” by the faraway sound of revving engines as my party once again battled deep sand. I bee-lined it to the sound. After a half-hour of blind brush-busting, I stepped from the darkness into the light of Land Cruisers and the welcome of a frantic wife and worried PH.

As big a deal as that rescue was at the time, it fades to nothingness compared to the rescue to be experienced when God, through faith in Jesus, rescues us from the “domain of darkness” and transfers “us to the kingdom of His beloved Son!” By His grace, I can count myself “twice rescued,” and God’s rescue is permanent, placing us forever in the Light! Are you in the darkness? God is always ready to rescue. You only have to ask.
