Decision Time

Joshua 24:15: “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Manitoba, my first hunt ever in Canada. A friend was frantically digging through the snow next to me for the cartridge he had dropped in his hast. The biggest buck I had ever seen was 30 yards away, my crosshairs on him. But alas, two problems stood in the way. One, my friend was sitting “shotgun” when we drove up on the buck and had immediately claimed shooting rights. Two, we were on a public road passing through private land. As the buck began walking toward the nearby timber, I faced a decision – shoot the monster non-typical, alienating my friend and breaking the law, or let the biggest buck I’ll ever see walk away. It was a clear decision between right and wrong. Pained though I was, I stayed my trigger finger.

Today, the world is forcing us all to make hard choices and pick sides…to make a decision on what we believe, what we stand for and who we will place our faith and trust in. Just watch the nightly news and you’ll see a world where battle lines are being drawn. Where previously held “rights” are called wrong and “wrongs” are called right. Where good and evil, truth and lie are “relative.” Where spin usurps fact. Where collective blame replaces personal responsibility. Where anything goes. If it feels good, do it. The time has come to decide what we believe. More and more the choice seems to be between what’s right in the eyes of man versus what’s right in the eyes of God. As a Christian, the words of Joshua from some 3,000 years ago speak for me, “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” What…or better, WHO…do you choose?
