I was watching “Bucks of Tecomate” recently...Mr Ranns Thomas described making a mineral lick. Stated to dig a 3ft X 3ft hole abot 6” to 1ft deep...purchase a small plastic tray which looked about 18” X 24” X4” ??? ...  Ranns dumped “product in question”???? into tray, then filled with dirt… then put corn on top so deer would find it! Ranns...what exact product did you use for the minerals? What was it called? How much did you use in each lick?  Any help is appreciated! Thanks

I do not know exactly what was used on the show, but have seen a couple on the market.

http://www.buckgrub.com for example.

But the one I really like and use every year is Imperial 30-06.  You put it down just like outlined in your message, pour in about 1/2 of a 5 pound back and rake it in.  I only dig down about 1-2 inches, and deer will paw and dig a hole about 6-8 inches as they lick the minerals.  It will then fill with water when it rains and the minerals are in the water.  Pick a spot and use it every year, and deer will keep using it.

The buck grub noted before is a pretty good route. I use it with a mix of about 60-40 with salt, and i mix it into a hard packed clay area right on a creek bed on my property, and it looks like a dirt fill site. The deer seem to actually eat the dirt right off the ground. It also adds tons to there diet.

Hey guys - I haven’t been able to forum for a while but found this topic. In that MM I was using Tecomate Mineral Supplement called “Horns-a-Plenty”. OK, I know deer don’t have horns but as we often say at Tecomate “Horns” is an accepted slang term among hunters for antlers. I highly recommend you try our HaP blend. We use only 30% salt and it is packed with Di-flourinated Calcim Phosphate - a very high quality form of calcium and phosphorous that is very digestible for whitetails. Other cattle blocks and granular blends use cheap forms of Ca and P. I also like to mix our granular supplement with supplemental feeds like cotton seed. It will cling to the fiber of cotton seed so when deer eat the seed they get direct delivery of the minerals. For adding HaP to corn or soybeans you can mix it all up with a soda (Coke, Sprite, Sams Cola). As the soda dries it gets sticky and the HaP will then stick to the hard seed feeds. Also, believe it or not - in my back yard feeding tests I’ve found that deer like the soda added. A few of my clients use this method so much they have gone to buying Sams Cola or other generic sodas to save some money. You can find HaP at http://www.tecomateseed.com.
