If whitetail supposedly require approximately 3000 pounds of food per year, will a 250 acre plantaion with several multi acre plots yielding anywhere from 5-8 thousand pounds per acre, along with the native forage, provide enough food to carry 40-50 deer? I don’t intend on fencing the property, i think its too small but the deer herd has been slaughtered by previous hunters. I just wanna create a suitable habitat for me and other family members(about 7) to hunt quality deer and maybe take the same amount of deer from the herd each yeah. Any opinions of track size to hunters or suggestions of any sort are appreciated.

I’m planning this early summer’s food plots and offer this to others. I experienced great success with the combination seed mixture of peas, soybeans, and sorghum. The beans provided the summer feed for the growing antlers, and the sorghum provided cover that they liked into the fall, and then they loved to eat the sorghum pods later. It was a good seed mixture, I can’t remember the name though. Might have been Lab Lab, I think.

Also, I’ve been planting these plots for 5 years. Spring and fall. This year in September, I planted alot of wheat and clover mixture over about 4 acres and will leave that through the spring seeding. The turkeys will come. I will plant some Chufa in June, about 1/2 acre. But the other 4 acres of previously planted plots, I’m going to let it grow this year, into native weeds, grasses, etc. Just want to see if that develops into natural cover and food.

My place is eastern Kentucky. The bottoms, about 5 acres are the food plot areas. Another 100 acres is woods on high hills and slopes.

Any advice is appreciated.

I have lived in Snyder Texas for the last fiftenn years and finally got two huge sctions of land to hunt this year. I want to spen the following off-season preparing a small section of maybe two or three acres, of a good food plot in order to bring more deer in and increase the size of both bucks and does. I have never managed any game and have only been a free range hunter. We get very little rainfall here in Snyder therfore I need to find a food source that will grow good in this climate. The land owner is going to allow me to work some areas in this off season to prepare the land and my main goal is to prepare a spot to take some of the less fortunate kids from this area to a place where there success rate of getting a good buc will be better. I enjoy hunting but my main concern is for my nephews and some less fortunate children from this area. I have been watching many hunting shows and the Bucks of Tecomate are very impressive in size and growth. I’m willing to put forth great effort in reaching my goals for the kids but my funding for the project is going to be tight with todays economy plus I will be doing all the labor myself and with some help from my wife. I think my best bet is to plant a good food plot and place some feeders in the area. We have lots of deer in the area but most are small in stature with small racks. I have been bless to have aquired this lease at no cost and need some advice from hunters with more experience in the land managing process. I’m a good Christian person who love nature and want to share my blessing of having good property to hunt with children and people who have not been as lucky. I will not be able to afford to have a consultant come assist but I would apreciate and advice from the forums and professioanal of Tecomate. Any advice would be appreciated and may God Bless all hunters and their families.

Hi Guys,

I am new to farming food plots and farming for wildlife, and was very happy to find this forum. We have a 100 acre hunting property small farm in Western Nebraska on the Platte River.

We have no irrigation, and are not allowed to irrigate by pumping water out of the platte. So we are reduced to “dryland” farming. Does Tecomate or anyone have a wildlife seed blend, or some other answer for such farming that will produce great food plots?

Thanks!

on the family’s farm so far this season i’ve encountered as many as 12 does/yearlings per sitting supporting my assumption of a possible 20 overall, three different six points and three or four sizable 2.5-3 year bucks. I mistakenly took a small spiked buck for a doe, that’s it. we have great neighbors that are whitetail enthusiasts too but manage to hunt greater amounts of time than myself. of the approximate eight 2.5-3 year old bucks they’ve already taken off their leased club, one was a buck I had seen. any suggestions as to what I should do for the herd or the farm to hold these deer or atleast increase my chances of taking a big one?
